 NY Chapter President George Corde
A Letter from Our President, George E. Corde, Jr., CPCU - March 2010
We have entered the second half of our Chapter year and it is appropriate that we take stock of our accomplishments and more importantly look forward to the planned activities for the remainder of the year. The Committee structure has served membership well, evidenced by the variety of communications, the number of programs provided by the Chapter and the behind the scenes work performed to build membership and assure member needs are met. Please consider volunteering your time to the further development of your Chapter. Volunteering gives you increased opportunities to network, meet new friends and develop leadership and other professional development skills. This is your association; participate so that you can mold it to meet your needs.
Membership Drive
Please renew your membership if you have not already done so. Membership includes admission to one of The Chapters regular meetings during calendar year 2010 and allows for a $10 discount on the registration fees at almost all other events. Our membership drive is on-going. If you know a CPCU that has not been active with the Chapter, please encourage them to join you at a meeting.
Upcoming Programs
We just had an excellent February program that featured Michael Sapnar, EVP and CUO, Transatlantic Reinsurance Company, who spoke about “The January 1, 2010 Reinsurance Renewal Season and Beyond.” Several members have requested another social similar to our Holiday Party and I am please to announce that Eunice Halstead has agreed to help put on a “Spring Fling Social” one April evening. Additionally, the APIW has asked if we would consider putting on a Golf Event at Chelsea Pier as was done last year. The following additional programs are planned.
- March 25th Luncheon – Ethics led by Ruth Erickson
- April – Open (would like to have a Risk Manager address our group)
- May 26th – I-DAY with other NYC Associations at St. John’s University
- June – Past Presidents and Murry Bergtraum’s Virtual Insurance Company Presentation
New Communications Tool - Shutterfly
In January we established an account on Shutterfly, cpcunyc.shutterfly.com, allowing the Chapter to post the many pictures taken at our events. This allows members to see a broader range of pictures than we can publish in the Applegram. The site allows everyone to share their pictures. Each event will have a separate album. I am looking for someone to help me manage this site (very easy job).
The site has albums from the Conferment Lunch, Holiday Party, APIW/CPCU Joint Lunch, February Meeting on Reinsurance and the Chinese American Insurance Association’s Annual Lunar Banquet.
Volunteers Needed for I-Day Event
We are in the process of planning an I-Day with other prominent insurance associations at St. John’s University’s School of Insurance on May 26th. The plan for this half day event is for each of 6 (six) associations to provide a speaker for a one hour time slot with 2 courses offered during each hour. The day will be filed for CE credits and individuals can earn up to 3 CE credits. An event of this scope is a great opportunity for NY City’s Insurance Associations to give back to the city’s employers while providing professional development opportunities to the insurance community. Contact me if you would like to assist in developing this event.
Leadership Summit: Orlando, FL: April 29th – May1st
All CPCU Society leaders and volunteers are encouraged to attend the 2010 Leadership Summit to help chart the Society’s future course. The Leadership Summit is the largest annual gathering of Society volunteers and provides excellent incite on how to provide our membership value. Hundreds of leaders and volunteers attend, including officers, directors, chapter governors, task force and committee members, and chapter and interest group leaders. Program pricing and lodging can’t be beat – not to mention the promise of good weather! More information is available at www.cpcusociety.org.
Library and Archives Rediscovered!
On a recent trip to St. John’s University School of Insurance, Lou Nunez and I went on a tour with the Librarian who showed us both the CPCU archives and an area of the Library called John B. Walker Library which was established by the Chapter in there 1990’s. Lou and John DiForte are working to digitize the archives and restock the library with new CPCU texts. The library will restore the bookcase and plaque.
Writers, Speakers and Teachers
During the course of our careers many of us have the opportunity to speak, write or teach on insurance issues. Remember to note during these occasions that you are a CPCU, as it adds to your credibility and provides visibility to our designation. Please report your public speaking and articles to me, as I would like to recognize your work to our Chapter membership and employers, where appropriate, to enhance your visibility and that of the CPCU designation. Whenever possible I would also like to make your articles available to our membership. In February, Donald George published an article in International Perspectives, a quarterly publication of the International Interest Group. Don reported on a seminar conducted at the Annual Meeting titled “Insurance and a Sustainable World.” This issue of International Perspectives also featured an article that recapped another seminar, titled “International Insurance Perspectives – Oops… My Client Has Gone International,” in which Michael Leinenbach, our Program Chair was a panelist. Copies of this publication are found at the following link.http://international.cpcusociety.org/file_depot/0-10000000/0-10000/8111/folder/92929/IntlInsFeb2010.pdf
Get involved – be recognized as a member of the most prestigious, relevant and visible professional insurance association in the greater NY area. I look forward to your participation.
