 NY Chapter President George Corde
A Letter from Our President, George E. Corde, Jr., CPCU
I thank the CPCU Society’s NY Chapter membership for entrusting me with your confidence to provide stewardship to the Chapter during the upcoming year. Also, I congratulate Bart Shachnow, Past President for the Chapter’s many accomplishments over his stewardship period.
The purpose of the letter is to share my vision for the NY Chapter and let you know where we will focus during the upcoming year. My vision is that our Chapter be viewed as the most prestigious, relevant and visible professional insurance association in the greater NY area.
Many may argue that we are already there; however, I believe we can do better. To “up our game” and better meet the needs of our membership, we will focus on enhancing our activities in the following areas:
Ř Communications.
- Internally improve communications in both quality and quantity with Chapter membership so that everyone knows what we are doing and where we are going
- Externally we will improve visibility with local employers, other insurance associations and the business community
Ř Structure: establish committees in areas of strategic interest and appoint proven leaders to each
Ř Identify and establish strategic relationships with selected associations, educational organizations and employers
Ř Grow participation of membership
The strategic concepts above will be accomplished through the activities of committees. The key to our success is increasing the participation of our membership. The greater number of members we can involve the more rewarding Society membership will be to all. To volunteer your time and talents to help the New York Chapter please email me directly at George.Corde@AIG.com.
Why volunteer for a committee?
- You will meet others in the NY insurance community (networking) that you have a common bond with (education – CPCU). Perhaps even make new friends!
- Develop leadership skills, new knowledge and hone existing talents. How? Run a meeting, write an article for our Applegram, attend a Connections meeting with an insurance employer, learn about social networking websites, do data mining for target marketing on our member directory.
- Become visible with both your employer and others in the insurance community. An objective of both the Chapter and Society is to champion member success.
If you have not been involved with the Chapter, and don’t know where to volunteer your time, give me a call and we can discuss where your interests can best fit. Remember, we are looking for those looking to hone existing skills as well as those looking to learn new skills. Additionally, each committee will have experienced chapter members to provide guidance and support.
Don’t be afraid of the time commitment. We have both small and large tasks. One of our mottos is many hands make light work – in fact that is our preference; we prefer the involvement of many.
The Committees and some of the exciting activities they will be engaged in are discussed briefly below.
Communications Committee
- Re-establish a social networking site for NY Chapter members on LinkedIn
- Publish our Applegram newsletter on a quarterly basis
- Update and manage our website
LinkedIn offers special networking and communications capabilities. To have this site offer the Chapter its maximum value, we need volunteers who are familiar with either LinkedIn or other social networking sites. Involvement with this committee will offer those that have never been part of a social networking community an opportunity to lean first hand how they work. The Communications Committee also needs article writers, editors and members who will assure that our website is as attractive and relevant as it can be for our membership.
Meetings Committee
Reestablish a full slate of scheduled meetings, in both downtown and midtown locations. Meetings cater to a variety of interest including networking, education and CE credits for licensing requirements.
- Run the NY Chapter Conferment and I-Day events
Much of our Chapter activities are channeled through the gatherings put on by this committee. Put your talents to work by planning an event or meeting, coming up with an idea for speaker topic, providing or being a speaker or simply lend a hand by being a greeter. All are welcome and needed by this committee.
Connections &Sponsorship Committee
Visits will be held with the top insurance employers in the Greater NY area to thank them for their support of the NY Chapter and Society and let them know the scope of the value proposition we can provide to them. We will champion our members who work at these firms. Think of the visibility that participation on this committee can provide you in the NY insurance market! We need volunteers.
Membership Committee
We will conduct a few short surveys of our membership to assure that we are meeting their needs. We need to cater to a broad group, including: active and inactive CPCU’s, new designees, CPCU students, retirees and out of work members. We need mentors for new designees and CPUC candidates, as well as members that like to work with spreadsheets to data mine of our membership database of over 1,000 people. The more people we can involve in Chapter activities, the better for all.
Executive Committee
In addition to managing the business of the Chapter, this committee will include activities in educational areas such as the work the Chapter has long been engaged in with Project Invest with Murry Bergtraum High School, establishing strategic partnerships with other insurance associations (we need liaisons), educational institutions like St. John’s University, ethics awareness initiatives and Spread the Word communications to assure that the good works of our chapter and its members are recognized by employers and the business community.
Get involved – be recognized as a member of the most prestigious, relevant and visible professional insurance association in the greater NY area. I look forward to your participation and an exciting CPCU Society chapter year.
